| ~ Marshalling ~ |
 |
Since Jaime won initiative and chose to be first player, he marshalls first. First, he counts his total gold: he has 5 on his plot, Hear Me Roar; 2 on Fallow Fields; and 2 on Lannisport Steward. That gives him a total of 9 gold. Gold is simply counted; it is not knelt to be used.
With that gold, he deploys Cersei Lannister (3 gold), Feuding Clanswoman (2 gold), and Doubting Septa (1 gold). He also marshalls Queen Cersei's Chambers (1 gold) and attaches Gilded Plate (0 gold) to Cersei. Make sure you read what each card does.

Notice that he has only used a total of 7 gold, even though he had 9 to spend. What happens to the rest? Nothing - it's gone; gold un-used is gold wasted. It's also possible that the Lannister player wants to be careful of over-deploying. There are plot cards that hurt the overly-aggresive player. . .
The Lannister player is done with his marshalling. Now it's your turn!
Once again, here are your cards:
How much gold do you have? You have 2 from your plot (Respect of the Old Gods) and 1 from The Roseroad - 3 gold total. That's not very much!
Fortunately, you have cost reducers: the House Umber Recruiter and your plot, Respect of the Old Gods. Read what each does.
Let's take advantage of Respect of the Old Gods first. We can put Sansa Stark into play for free!
That's all good, but what about the second Sansa Stark? Can we pay 2 gold to put her out as well? The answer is no, because Sansa is unique, as indicated by the flag in front of her name. That flag means that a player can only have one of that card in play (however, two different players can each have the same unique card in play).
So is the second Sansa useless? Nope, because unique cards have another property: you can attach them to a copy of the card already in play - for free - as a duplicate. Duplicates can be discarded to save that character or location from being killed or discarded. However, duplicates don't count as attachments (for purposes of cards which refer to attachments). So let's attach our second Sansa to the first as a duplicate:

We still have 3 gold left, but our cheapest remaining character costs 4 gold! Are we done? Nope, not by a long shot. Take a look at Narrow Sea. It's a free location that can be discarded to reduce the cost of the next Stark character we play by 2. That means that we can use it to reduce the cost of Wolfswood Hunters by 2, so that it only costs 2. We can also kneel the House Umber Recruiter to reduce the cost by one more, so that the cost is only 1! Let's do that:

House Umber Recruiter and Narrow Sea reduce the cost of Wolfswood Hunters to 1

Note the funny diamond +1 symbol that Wolfswood Hunters has. That shape corresponds to one in a plot - the initiative symbol. So if the Wolfswood Hunters makes it to the next Plot phase, you'll get an initiative bonus of 1.
We have 2 gold left. We'll attach the Crested Wolf Shield to Eddard with that gold, and play a The Roseroad (we already have one in play, but The Roseroad is not unique). Our last gold is wasted.

Things look good! To recap, we had 3 gold for our marshalling. We used our plot ability to play Sansa Stark for free; attached her duplicate for free; used House Umber Recruiter and Narrow Sea (discarded) to reduce the cost of Wolfswood Hunters to 1; played Crested Wolf Shield on Eddard for 1; and played The Roseroad for free. We have three cards left in our hand.
One last point: note that all the cards we played either had the Stark shield in the upper right corner (Wolfswood Hunters) or a blank - neutral - shield (The Roseroad). This means we can play them at cost. If we wanted to play a non-House and non-neutral card, such as Doubting Septa, we would have to pay a gold penalty of 2. This means that Doubting Septa would have cost us 3. Narrow Sea had a Stark shield and a Baratheon shield, meaning that either house could play it with no gold penalty.
We're done with out marshalling. Let's see what Jaime can throw at us during the Challenges phase!
